Week 6: History of Earth

 

  1.  What did you do in lab today? What was the big question? 
    1. I was not in lab, I went home for a family emergency. Emailed Alexis
  2. What did you learn in Thursday's discussion?
    1. Took exam.
  3. Read the online textbook, Chapter 6:
    1. What did you learn?
      1. I learned that snowball earth events are periods when Earth was nearly completely covered in ice. Positive feeback loops such as ice reflecting sunlight to further cool the planet occured during there periods.
    2. What was most helpful?
      1. The timeline of Earth's history was the most helpful to me as it puts in perspective humans are in comparion to the entire span of Earth's existence.
    3. What do you need more information on?
      1. I would like more information on how scientists determine the age of ancient rocks and fossils.
  4. What questions, concerns, and/ or comments do you have?
    1. None.

Week 1 How do the phases of the moon occur? The moon lights up at night because of how the sun shines on it as it orbits so different parts light up at different times depending on where it is in orbit.  Does not spin around earth consistently. Not on same plan, not in straight circle. We see sunlights reflection. Takes 28ish days to get around the Earth so every 28 days you see a different phase.  What causes seasons? Because the Earth is tilted, certain parts of the Earth get more sunlight at different parts of the year. I was unsure of why scientists believe Mars is livable and similar to Earth, but the textbook clarified that there are satelites and rovers on Mars to find out this information.
